Can you believe Spring Break is here already? Every day at calendar time, we place the next number on our number line for days spent in first grade. On Thursday, we placed number 123. So much learning has taken place in those 123 days of first grade! Many children are reading or almost ready to read chapter books. We are no longer "learning to read". Now they are "reading to learn". They are using math strategies to become more fluent with their math fact knowledge. They can explain what they are thinking and how they came up with an answer when problem solving. How much more can they learn? PLENTY! We are currently learning how to count money using four coins, and have three chapters to go in math. We have one more reading book in our series with some challenging material to read and learn about. In Science, we will be learning about life cycles - particularly the monarch butterfly life cycle. We will have tiny monarch caterpillars delivered mid April and we will watch the transformation. Last fall we were fortunate enough to have some fifth grade friends give us some bigger caterpillars found on our playground. We will use that prior knowledge and observe it all again and document the changes in a journal this time.
So, rest, recharge, and come back ready to learn! I wish you all a "Hoppy Easter" and look forward to seeing how much more we can learn after you come back!
