PTO Pizza Party!
We celebrated on Tuesday! If you remember, our class earned the most money of all the classrooms in the entire school for the Hawkeye Hustle fund raiser! One of our rewards was $100 to spend in our classroom. So far, we have added two more bean bag chairs to use during our Daily 5 time each day. We still have plenty of money left, so we will have even more added to our classroom soon!
Our other reward was a pizza party from our PTO! Mrs. Kleinheksel brought in Little Caesar's Pizza and root beer and orange pop for us, plus we each had a small container of Pringles chips as well. The kids were also excited because of our two guests - Mr. Ferrell and Adam!
We would like to thank our wonderful Hamilton Elementary PTO for the money and the pizza party! We had a wonderful lunch and are very proud that we helped earn the money for Hamilton Elementary School! Enjoy the pictures everyone!

Fun Friday!
What do you get when you teach two Science lessons with lots of exploration time in one day? FUN FRIDAY !!! I can't remember when I have heard so many different children state how much they enjoyed school. Not even when we went to the pumpkin patch or fire station mind you! What a rewarding day to be their teacher! What, do you ask, caused such excitement??? MAGNETS! Yes, you heard me right... magnets! Who knew?
We began our lessons with two books about magnets. The first was a non-fiction book which explained how magnets work. The children learned that magnets have a north and a south pole. They also learned the terms "attract" and "repel". Magnets only attract magnetic metals: metal with iron or steel in it. They also learned that opposite poles attract each other, and like poles repel each other. The second book was a fiction book called "Mickey's Magnet". This is a story about a little boy who spills a box of pins, and his father suggests using a magnet to pick them up. This propels the boy to discover what types of items in his home are attracted to his magnet. It was a perfect lead in to our first exploration time.
We went fishing with magnets! Horseshoe magnets were attached to pencils with string. Our 'pond' was a basket filled with items made of magnetic metal, non-magnetic metal, or no metal at all. The kids had so much fun taking turns with their partner discovering how magnets work!
After our fishing exploration, the children took the horseshoe magnet off the line and explored our classroom. You should have heard the science talk in the room! "Mrs. Ferrell, the white board must have iron or steel inside, because my magnet is attracted to it!" "Hey, the black part of the pencil sharpener is metallic!" "Look, our gel boards have iron or steel inside, because the magnet draws on it!" These are just a few of the comments yelled out during our lesson!
Next, I amazed them with a cool trick! I alternated the rings so that the like poles would not stick. They learned that when the magnets do not stick to each other, it is called 'Repel'.
This inspired the children to explore with two bar magnets. They discovered they could make the bar magnets spin without touching them when they put the two like ends together. The shouts across the room of children wanting to show me what they discovered was amazing! As I stated earlier, it was a great day to be a teacher!
Our journal entry for this lesson included drawing and labeling the concepts of attract and repel using a drawing along with labels. It was most certainly a "FUN FRIDAY"!
Thanks for reading!

Owen catches a key chain with a key on it. The key was not made of magnetic metal, but the ring holding the key was. |
Taylor shows off her catch. She attracted the metal piece on a pony tail hair tie. |
Each pair of children shared a pond and pole. |
Kylee shows how the metal portion of scissors is attracted to the horseshoe magnet. |

After lunch, we recorded what we learned in our Science journals. First we wrote about our magnet observations: how they are attracted to iron or steel, how they have a north and south pole, and what we caught with our magnet fishing poles.
Our next lesson was aimed more toward learning about attract and repel. This time, I began the lesson with a magic trick of sorts. I used a wooden stand with magnetic rings. First I showed them that when the the magnets stick together, it is called "Attract". See the picture below:
The magnet rings are attracted to each other. |
OOOOHHHH, are you as amazed as your first grader was??? |

Turkey Talk and Hawkeye Hustle News
Can you believe it? November already! I can't believe we have been together for two months! Time sure flies when we are having fun! Since we took home our jack-o-lanterns and spiders that adorned our classroom and hallway in October, we needed a new hallway decoration! So, we made beautiful turkeys! The children brainstormed what they are thankful for first, wrote about that on the turkey tummy, and then added the head, feet, rainbow tail feathers and feathers around the writing. Not only do the kids enjoy creating a craft, there is more involved than they think! The fine motor skills needed to write, cut, curl the feathers around a pencil, and glue are important. It is always interesting to me to see what they are thankful for in their writing as well. Last, putting a craft together correctly after viewing me make one is always challenging.
Now for the BIG NEWS !!!! I am certain you heard, but just in case... two big announcements were made to end our day and week at school. As you know, the Hawkeye Hustle occurred last week. This was a new fundraiser for our PTO. Instead of selling items, the children asked for donations from family and friends to help support Hamilton Elementary School in exchange for a full day of 'Hustling' at school. Grade levels took turns running, hopping, walking, skipping, dancing and more with Mrs. Petersen, our P.E. teacher, leading us.
Well, in exchange for the hard work, some incentives were offered to the students. First, four students were randomly drawn from all students who contributed to the effort to receive a prize. Second, the top earning student from each grade was awarded $50! Last, the top earning classroom was awarded a pizza party in the near future and $100 to spend in their classroom!
And the big announcements... our own Ryleigh was the top earning first grader! Congratulations to Ryleigh!

Ryleigh was so excited to hear her name announced! The cheers in our classroom for her were so loud! |
The next announcement drew screams and high fives! OUR CLASS earned the top selling prize! Kids were running around the room, jumping up and down, and I think I even saw a few happy tears! I almost felt a little sorry for the other classes (but not really)...So thank you to all of the parents for helping your child with this important fund raiser! The PTO uses the money so wisely and all the children benefit greatly at Hamilton Elementary School in so many ways because of this wonderful group of parents!
We will have a hard time deciding what to spend our $100 on, but I know it will be put to good use! |
Way to go kids! We are so proud to win this award! |
One calm picture to see the smiles! Notice Ryleigh holding our prize? |
The only way I can get them to pose for nice photos is to promise to add in a crazy one at the end! I like Isaac's pose, but everyone loves to be crazy! |
