Fire Station Visit
On Wednesday, we visited the fire station to culminate our learning about fire safety and prevention. Firefighter Rob and Firefighter Frank were our hosts for our visit. We spent just over an hour there, and had lots of fun!
We began our visit in the garage. Firefighter Rob briefly discussed the job of volunteer firefighters. The Hamilton staff consists of firefighters who all have other jobs, and are paged when they are needed to assist in an emergency. He shared the many different types of calls they might make, and many children also had stories to share with him!
We then were invited to walk through the garage to get an up close look at the trucks and the many tools housed in each truck. The kids were very excited to see the different trucks and learn what types of emergencies each would be used for.
We then moved into another room. Firefighter Rob talked about a few more prevention tips. He reminded the students about never touching lighters or matches, practicing home fire drills, checking smoke detectors, and more. He then showed the students an 'oldie, but goody' video created many, many years ago by The Walt Disney Company. Many of the concepts we learned and reviewed in school were shown in the video as well.
After the video, Firefighter Rob talked about what to do if your home was on fire. Roll out of bed and crawl close to the floor. Feel the door before you open it. If it is hot, do not open it because fire would be on the other side! Instead, go to the window and get out that way (or wait near the window for help). NEVER hide under the bed or in the closet! Firefighters may LOOK scary and sound funny, but they are there to help! Then... a surprise visitor came into the room dressed in full turnout gear! It was MRS. HEUER (Firefighter Rob's wife, and paraprofessional in our own Hamilton Elementary!)
Finally, the children were given a coloring/activity book, an honorary firefighter sticker/badge, and a sticker to place on their bedroom window to signal to firefighters where a child's bedroom is in case of a fire emergency.
We had a nice time visiting the fire station. Thank you so very much to Firefighter Rob, Firefighter Frank, and Mrs. Heuer for hosting our visit and taking the time to review important fire safety and prevention tips with us! We appreciate you and the very hard job that you do to keep us safe!

Hawkeye Hustle
Last Friday was a special day at school! It was the Hawkeye Hustle! The PTO, staff and students spent two weeks gathering money donations from family, friends and local businesses. In return, the students and staff of Hamilton Elementary School walk, run, skip, gallop and more around our track all day long! Each grade level takes a turn to go out to the track and do their part for this fundraiser. Our PTO then uses all the money earned for many different activities and supplies at school. All grade levels have access to Raz Kids and IXL - reading and math learning tools used on our computers and IPads. They also provide money for the teachers to supplement classroom supplies in each classroom to enhance learning. They plan various events for the kids like roller skating parties, Santa's Workshop and FUN NIGHT! I'm certain I am forgetting many other things that our PTO provides for us. Did you know that our PTO spent over $26,000 last school year, which directly benefited THE KIDS!
Thank you parents, for donating, and helping your child find others to donate to our school. Each and every penny earned will benefit the kids at Hamilton Elementary School! We appreciate our awesome PTO and all that they do for us! It was our pleasure to take our turn on the track to help! Enjoy the pictures below!
I was amazed by the energy those kids had! Many of them ran for a good portion of our time on the track! After our turn, the kids were rewarded with a glass of water, an apple and a bag of chips! The only negative was the bees who really wanted the sweet apples! Yikes! Poor Molly even got stung!
Thank you again to the parents, family, friends and businesses who donated money to our school! Thank you to all the kids for doing your part in return! We appreciate your support for our learning at Hamilton Elementary School!
