Happy Thanksgiving!
We made a couple of wonderful turkey projects this month that deserve sharing on the classroom blog! The first was a 'curly turkey'. This took patience and a lot of fine motor control. The kids did an awesome job with them!

Our most recent project was a 'directed drawing'. The kids had to listen VERY CAREFULLY and draw each step after watching me on the board. It was our first try with this, and the kids had a ball! They were happy with their results and were proud to take them home today!

Awesome map makers
We have spent time learning how to make a map of our classroom, of our school, and the surrounding neighborhood of our school. The kids have learned about directions on a map (North, South, East and West) and learned a funny little saying to help with the directions: "Never Eat Soggy Waffles", which stands for North, East, South and West when labeling directions on the map in a clockwise direction.
We have also learned that symbols on a map stand for different things, and that often times a map will have a 'key' in the corner to explain what the symbols stand for. Finally, we have learned about a compass rose on a map.
I offered a challenge for homework last weekend. Instead of a math paper, I asked each child to create their own map of their home and surroundings. Some of the children added labels, or symbols and even map keys! I even saw some directions on the maps! I know they had help from the awesome family members at home as well.
We took time this week to share their maps in small groups. Let me tell you this: every student was SUPER excited to show and explain their map to their small group. It was fun to listen in to their questions and comments about the different maps!
Great job everyone! I appreciate your help at home. As the children learned about map making at school, I wanted to know if what they learned would transfer over to them creating a map on their own, and I was amazed at how well they did!
Here are our proud map makers!
