Spring Break!

Can you believe Spring Break is here already?  Every day at calendar time, we place the next number on our number line for days spent in first grade.  On Thursday, we placed number 123.  So much learning has taken place in those 123 days of first grade!  Many children are reading or almost ready to read chapter books.  We are no longer "learning to read".  Now they are "reading to learn".  They are using math strategies to become more fluent with their math fact knowledge.  They can explain what they are thinking and how they came up with an answer when problem solving.  How much more can they learn?   PLENTY!  We are currently learning how to count money using four coins, and have three chapters to go in math.  We have one more reading book in our series with some challenging material to read and learn about.  In Science, we will be learning about life cycles - particularly the monarch butterfly life cycle.  We will have tiny monarch caterpillars delivered mid April and we will watch the transformation.  Last fall we were fortunate enough to have some fifth grade friends give us some bigger caterpillars found on our playground.  We will use that prior knowledge and observe it all again and document the changes in a journal this time.

So, rest, recharge, and come back ready to learn!   I wish you all a "Hoppy Easter" and look forward to seeing how much more we can learn after you come back!

Mecciah Murphy

This is Mecciah Murphy.  She is our student of the week!  Mecciah chose to have her picture taken in the art room to show off her artistic abilities!  Her favorite color is PURPLE.  Mecciah would love to visit China someday when she gets older.  The best thing about her is the fact that she has 'the best Mom in the whole world!'  (Aww, that melts your heart)   Her favorite television program is called Jessie, which is on Nickelodeon.   Mecciah would love to be a veterinarian when she grows up.  She is special because her parents love her!  She has two dogs - Cabbie and Sambuca.  Her favorite book is called "Pinkalicious", and her favorite sport is baseball.  Mecciah's favorite food is macaroni and cheese with hot dogs in it (also a favorite of her dad when he was a kid).

Another riddle to solve

Well, Mr. Ferrell visited for lunch today!  He thought and thought of a tough spot to hide his lucky star.  When he left, we both figured it would take days for the kids to find it!   You should have seen the class when they returned to our room.  Their eyes were searching all over the place.

Brady found the lucky green star within an hour!   It was hidden on the nose of Kierra's lion/lamb art project!   So, Brady chose Smarties as a reward for being so smart (and Kierra got some too because her lion/lamb was the hiding spot).

(Do you notice that Mari wanted to be in the picture???   Funny!)

Have a great weekend and enjoy this weather!

Donal Menear

Meet Donal Menear, our newest student of the week!   His favorite colors are GREEN and ORANGE.  He would like to visit Boston someday.  Donal thinks the best thing about him is the fact that he's COOL!  All of his favorite television shows are on Cartoon Network.  Someday when he grows up, Donal would like to be a policeman.  He is special because he has a very special family.  His family has a pet dog named Max.  Donal's favorite book is called "Naruto".  His favorite sport is basketball, but he also likes football.  Finally, Donal's favorite food is spaghetti and meatballs!  Yum!
