Fire Station, Super U Assembly and our ODC trip!

Last week was a big week for us! We had TWO field trips AND an assembly called Super U!   We began with a walking trip to the fire station just south of Hamilton Elementary School. Mrs. Heuer's husband, Rob Heuer, was our guide.  He showed us the many trucks there, let us look inside at the equipment, and let the kids ask questions about the trucks, fire safety and prevention.  After our tour, Mr. Heuer showed the kids an 'oldie, but goody' movie created by Disney about fire prevention.  Last, there was a special guest dressed in turnout gear!  It was a great review for the kids and lots of fun too!

Mr. Heuer show the kids what a smoke detector looks and sounds like.  Every bedroom
in a home needs a smoke detector as well as in hallways on each floor.  Always check the
batteries in your smoke detectors in the fall and in the spring.
A special guest came out dressed in full turnout gear!  Who could it be?????

Later that day, we had a special assembly called Super U!  The assembly was a game show format with lessons about how to be a SUPER U in school!  Students were chosen from the audience to participate in timed games.  Each game was tied to a theme to consider.  One of our own students, Lydia, was invited up to play a game!

In this challenge, the boys needed to race to dress up in super hero costumes. The presenter explained that we all have the "Super Power" to choose our words and actions. When we are careful to make good choices, it is like becoming our own "personal super hero".

to the other side of the gym.  Respect and kindness is something that you have to pass on. You have to give respect to get respect and show kindness for people to show you kindness.

Trust is something that you have to build between your friends, classmates, teachers and family members.
Trust takes a long time to build, but it can be easily damaged.

In this challenge, each team had to work together to transport wiggly tubes from a bucket into the final person's arms.

In this challenge, one member took 'slime' from a bucket and placed it into a container
with holes on the partner's head!  Joking around with a classmate is okay, but if someone asks us to stop
doing something or saying something, we need to listen and respect their request.


Finally, on Thursday, we had the opportunity to visit the Outdoor Discovery Center. Each first grade classroom took a tour with an ODC Naturalist.  She taught us about how plants and animals change in the fall and different habits and animal needs.  We will visit again in the winter and also in spring!

This is a bird feeder.  We stood very quietly while chickadees visited the feeder.


One of the habits we learned about was the pond.  We learned which animals and plants would be best suited
to live in the pond and surrounding area.


We visited the elk enclosure and noticed that an elk's natural habit is an open field.

This is a large log attached to a chain.  It is used for the male elk to 'play' with.

There are still a few flowers that bloom in the fall!

The kids were told that they could eat one of these berries, but should never eat
or smell plants in the wild without an expert to tell them if it is safe.

Our favorite part of the trip was at the end, when we went inside a small building and got to see and learn about a painted turtle, a toad, a garter snake and a black rat snake!

be a field and also near a pond.

to climb trees to get to birds and eggs as well as eating mice, rats and other field animals.

The kids touch a garter snake.  Named because it resembles the pattern that garters had
in the olden days.  Garter snakes also live in fields.

The black rat snake is cold blooded, which means it uses the environment
to warm itself.  While Jennifer was holding the snake, it didn't move very much (thank goodness)

Levi is brave enough to touch the snake!  I think almost every student did!  None of the adults chose to!

We had a fantastic week of learning in different ways!  Field trips and assemblies are special treats, but they are also wonderful learning experiences to cement what is learned in the classroom!  Thanks again to Mr. and Mrs. Heuer, Mrs. Klomparens and Mr. Tebo, and the ODC staff for such great experiences.

Noel




This is Noel.  He is our student of the week!  Noel's favorite color is YELLOW!  He would love to visit Canada and explore there.  When Noel grows up, he would like to be a builder.    He has a cat and a dog.  The dog is named Charkie (short for Charcoal) and the cat's name is Milsie.  Noel's favorite sport is baseball.  He likes to play first base or pitch.  Noel's favorite food is macaroni and cheese.  His favorite television program is called Wild Kratts because he likes animals.  Noel's favorite books are the Little Critter books by Mercer Mayer.  Noel is special because his name means "Christmas" but the very best thing about Noel is the fact that he is funny!

Jordan




This is Jordan!  She is our Student of the Week!   Jordan's favorite color is PURPLE!  Her favorite books are any Berenstain Bear books!  Jordan has many pets:   three rabbits, a cat named Snowbear and a chinchilla!  Jordan's favorite food is pepperoni pizza.  Her favorite sport is soccer.  She plays on the gold team!  When Jordan grows up, she would like to be a teacher.  Her favorite television show is Curious George.  Jordan would love to visit Michigan Adventure - especially the water park there!  Jordan is special because she has a big family!  But the VERY BEST thing about Jordan is that she makes lots of new friends!

Miss Nykamp

As all of you know, Miss Lydia Nykamp is our student teacher!  Miss Nykamp comes to us from Hope College, where she is anxiously working toward graduation and her teaching certificate!  Miss Nykamp will spend this semester with us and next semester working in a Special Education setting!  She will be hoping for her own classroom next fall!

Last week, Miss Nykamp taught the kids all about fire safety and prevention.  They reviewed and learned many tips and concepts during Fire Prevention week.  The unit ended with a fun project for the kids - making Dalmatian dogs!

This week, Miss Nykamp began our unit on maps and globes.  First, she taught the kids about Christopher Columbus.  She used a tennis ball to show the kids how small people in that time thought the world was.  She also showed them how Columbus would travel from Portugal to India around the bottom of Africa.  That was a long and dangerous trip, so Columbus (not realizing the Earth was so huge) wanted to sail West, around the Earth, to reach India!  Miss Nykamp then brought out our globe to show the kids the difference between what people THOUGHT and the ACTUAL size of the Earth. They could then easily understand why Columbus thought he reached India, when in fact, he reached the Bahamas!  Miss Nykamp asked the kids why he called the natives "Indians", and they realized that Columbus thought they landed in India - hence the name "Indians"!

Miss Nykamp then brings out the globe to show the kids the difference between
what people thought the Earth's size was, and how big it really was.  She also shows
the children Columbus' route from Portugal and Spain to the Bahamas.  The kids realized very easily why
Columbus thought he had found India, but didn't realize that he found a whole new world that people never
 realized was between Portugal and India!

Today, the kids learned about important features on a globe.  Miss Nykamp showed them that the North Pole is on the top of the globe and the South Pole is on the bottom.  The weather at the poles is always cold.  She also taught them that the 'belly' of the globe is called the Equator, and the weather there is always hot.  She pointed out the land, water, mountains, and different countries.  She discussed that the different colors and lines helped learners understand the boundaries of countries, but were not really on the Earth itself.  

Next, Miss Nykamp brought out a map of the world.  She discussed the difference between a globe and a map.  They found water, land, equator, and the four directions (North, South, East and West) on the map!

Finally, the children made their own model of the Earth with the features learned in the lesson!

Finally, Miss Nykamp does calendar with the class every morning.  She is a fantastic teacher and the kids are learning a lot from her!  Miss Nykamp will be taking over more subjects in the next couple of weeks, and Mrs. Ferrell will be the 'helper' in class!  Then, in late November, we will transition back to Mrs. Ferrell taking over again.  We are so lucky to have her with us and appreciate all the great ideas and fun she brings to our room!  

Miss Nykamp will be at Parent Teacher conferences in a couple of weeks as well, so you will all have the opportunity to talk with her personally then.  Until then, I am more than certain you are hearing all about her from your child each day!
